Panama, December 10, 2024. To mark Human Rights Day, Save the Children for Latin America and the Caribbean announces the winning photos of the first version of the Regional Photography Contest, which has highlighted the impacting images on hunger and climate change in the region and invites you to visit a virtual exhibition with a selection of participating photos. 

Currently, 43 million people suffer from hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean, and 37% of the population is food insecure. Climate change and hunger are two of the most urgent challenges for children, adolescents, and their families. 

One in eight children and adolescents around the world has had their rights significantly violated by the ten most extreme weather events this year, having to flee their homes, relying on humanitarian aid, exposing them to multiple protection risks, hunger, malnutrition, and lack of learning. 

Seeking to highlight these challenges, Save the Children announces the three winners of the Save the Children Regional Photo Contest for Latin America and the Caribbean:

First Place: Manuel Seoane Salazar - Fishing in an extinct lake.

Second Place: Luis Mauricio Aguilar Machicado - Maria in Resilience 

Third place: Fidel Justiniano Carrillo Carrillo - Water is not for everyone

Cristina Garcia, Save the Children's Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, says: 

“The participants in this contest have not only captured the crisis our planet is going through but also the hope and resilience of those who struggle every day. I want to thank all the professionals and amateur photographers who participated in the first edition of this contest. Through photographic art, we seek to generate a conversation with society to promote solutions to these urgent challenges for children and adolescents”.

Save the Children for Latin America and the Caribbean has selected a sample of 40 photos participating in the contest, which are exhibited in a virtual gallery on the website: https://concursofoto.org/exhibicion-virtual/

A distinguished panel of judges composed of Lucía Zoro, Save the Children's Global Content Producer, Victoria Ward, former Save the Children Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, and Ángela Ponce, renowned photojournalist and winner of a Sony award, evaluated the images received and will select the three winning photos.
