SAVE THE CHILDREN ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF THE EGLANTYNE JEBB JOURNALISM AWARD
Panama, December 12, 2022. Save the Children in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the support of the Inter American Press Association and the Gabo Foundation, held the awards ceremony for the "EglantyneJebb" Journalism Award, which seeks to recognize and promote journalism that gives a voice to children and adolescents in the region, placing their interests, situations, problems, issues and stories on the public agenda.
Save the Children received journalistic works from Latin American and Caribbean media focused on Migration and Displacement, Safe Return to School, Safe Networks and Resilient Families and Climate Change.
These are the winning entries of the EglantyneJebb Award from Save the Children Latin America and the Caribbean:
In Print Press the winning entry is: “DoisJovensRefugiados no Brasil”from the newspaper Joca by journalist Maria Carolina Cristianini.
In Radio, the winning entry was: “Retorno Seguro a Clases”broadcast by Radio Unión in Bolivia by journalist Marcia Kelly López Luna.
In Digital Press the winning entry was: “Dibujando mi realidad, niñezindígenaen América Latina”produced by Agenda Propia in Colombia and its community Red TejiendoHistorias. The award was received by the journalist Edilma Prada Céspedes.
In the Television Press category, the winning entry was: “Migraciónclimática, emergenciaen Guna Yala” by TVN Noticias in Panama, by journalist Isaías Cedeño.
The task of selecting the best works was in charge of a jury composed of: Leonor Mulero of the Inter-American Press Association; Nelly Luna, Journalistic Director of OjoPúblico; Marcelo Franco, Journalist and Teacher of the Gabo Foundation and Victoria Ward, Regional Director of Save the Children Latin America and the Caribbean.
During the event, the Peruvian journalist Elizabeth Salazar spoke about the importance of giving responsible coverage to issues that promote the rights of children and adolescents in the region.
Victoria Ward, Regional Director of Save the Children in Latin America and the Caribbean, states:
"I express my deep appreciation to the journalists who submitted their work to this first edition of Save the Children's EglantyneJebb Journalism Award for Latin America and the Caribbean. The purpose of this award is to recognize the work of journalists who practice their profession with responsibility, courage and creativity for the benefit of children and, above all, giving a voice to those who are not easily heard.
The media and journalists are key actors for the strengthening of children's rights in our countries. Thank you for your work, keep innovating and generating content that tells the stories of children and adolescents in the region".
The organization has named this award "EglantyneJebb" in honor of the British social activist, founder of Save the Children, who in addition to creating one of the leading organizations in the promotion and defense of the rights of children and adolescents, also drafted the first Declaration of Children's Rights in 1924, a text that was the basis for the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
