Kénold, an exemplary Community Health Worker

Rose-May Lorja, a young mother and resident of the community of Rhé, a locality of Camp-Perrin without a health center without infrastructure like the most difficult to access areas in Haiti. Rudimentary agriculture, free animal husbandry and small dry food stores are the main sources of income in rural Haiti, in the locality of Rhé the reality is no different without ignoring the fact that most people are young and unemployed because it is not a common practice for them.

Sincère Kénold is one of the community health workers working in this sector in Camp-Perrin. In these hard-to-reach communities, a Comunity Health Worker is essential to help people monitor their health issues; since they typically reside in the community they serve, they have the unique ability to bring information to where it is most needed for different purposes. They can reach residents of the community where they live. Community Health Workers are front-line agents of change, helping to reduce health disparities in underserved communities.

“The Community Health Workers are very useful to the communities because we do not need to go to the health center to have our children vaccinated. They make us aware of the simple things we can do to stay healthy.", said Rose-May.

Community Health Workers improve access to health care services, improve health and improve screening. They facilitate a better understanding between community members and the health and social services system. They also improve communication between community members and health providers. Also, they help in increasing the use of health care services and reducing the need for emergency and specialized services.

“Sometimes you feel embarrassed they call, sensitize you to go to the nearest hospital or health facility, either for you or your children. But in the end, you realize it was for your own good. Because I didn’t overlook it and went to the center. After lab tests, I was told I was pregnant.", She said with a smile on her face.

“Since then, I have been able to benefit from all the essential services: regular home visits, advice on lifestyle, balanced diet, medical visits to be carried out, services at the assembly station etc. Kénold even helped me with my birth project. Even after I gave birth, he continued to visit me and gave me all the services and advice for me and the baby. He gave me advice on family planning and thanks to him, I can perfectly plan my next pregnancies (if there will be any). My child is growing well and is in very good health. Kénold is always available to meet our needs, he is very useful to our community and provides services to everyone without exception", expressed the young mother.

I would ask the government, through the Ministry of Health, to further enhance the work of Community Health Workers by providing more materials, a huge bonus, more opportunities and encouragement to continue to carry out this heavy task. Also, I would like to thank Save the Children for supporting Kénold with the training necessary to carry out his tasks with care and professionalism. We are truly grateful.
